Now, visitors to Albuquerque and Santa Fe, N.M. have another alternative for travel between the two cities. The New Mexico Rail Runner Express train began service from Albuquerque on Dec. 17, terminating in Santa Fe at the train depot in the Railyard. The express is scheduled to run multiple times per day between the two cities, make one stop on the outskirts of Santa Fe and two inside the city limits. The train will be met by shuttle-bus service for transportation to other parts of Santa Fe as well. The new train route is also intended for visitors as an alternative to driving I-25, the main road between the cities, and for getting back and forth between towns.
There is also shuttle bus service planned from the Albuquerque airport to a nearby train stop. Because the Albuquerque – Santa Fe corridor contains 50 percent of the state's population, planners expect that the new train will see plenty of commuter use. Currently, eight weekday trains are planned with additional evening trains on Fridays, plus a Saturday schedule of seven runs. Extra trains are expected to be put on for major events.
The proposed fare from Santa Fe to Albuquerque is $8 for an all-day ticket, which is good for an unlimited number of trips.
