The brand-new New Mexico History Museum is inviting visitors to commemorate its grand opening with a three-day celebration during Memorial Day Weekend, from May 23-25.
The culmination of more than 20 years of planning, the museum honors the state’s rich history. Revisiting the days of the Native Americans’ pueblo homes and the Spanish explorers’ missions, retracing the trails of the western frontier and highlighting New Mexico’s vibrant contemporary arts community, the museum exhibits will cover more than 400 years of human experience.
“The New Mexico History Museum will be the starting place for the New Mexico cultural experience,” said New Mexico governor Bill Richardson.
To kick off its debut, the Museum of New Mexico Foundation will host an evening gala on May 23, where guests can preview exhibits and explore the new facilities, including the alfresco rooftop terrace that opens to the night sky. Admission is $200 per person.
During the official grand public opening from May 24-25, the museum will invite visitors to celebrate with two days of free admission. Crowds will be able to enjoy cultural activities and entertainment reflecting New Mexico’s vivid past, including Native American drumming, a lowriders exhibition, karate demonstrations, an Indian School Spoken Word Performance, live music, dancing, artisans and Chautauqua performers in period costumes.
