Aug. 2-4 are the dates for the 2012 Te Manahua Maori festival at the Polynesian Cultural Center, a popular visitor attraction located on Oahu's north shore.
The festival perpetuates the Maori culture through singing and dancing performances and competitions, which include haka (male posture dance), poi (a graceful dance implement with the twirling ball on end of string) and visually stunning kakahu (attire).
This year's festival features a concert by two of New Zealand's top artists making their Hawaii debut: Maisey Rika and Ria Hall.
As a young artist in her 20s, Maisey Rika has already released two albums, both of which climbed the New Zealand Top 40 charts. She has been described as having “one of the most arresting and beautiful voices to emerge from New Zealand, ever.”
Ria Hall is an exciting new voice on the contemporary New Zealand music landscape. Hall burst onto the scene with an inspired performance at the opening ceremony of the Rugby World Cup last year.
