The $55 million upgrade and renovation of San Francisco’s Moscone Center is now underway thanks to the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau (SFCVB), the City and County of San Francisco and the San Francisco Tourism Improvement District (SFTID). With an expected completion date of July 2012, this project is considered to be the most extensive of its kind since the opening of the Moscone South hall in 1981, the establishment of the Esplanade Ballroom complex in 1991 and the addition of Moscone North hall in 1992.
Renovations include everything from basic aesthetic repairs to significant infrastructure projects, including: new carpet, paint, lighting and ceilings; restroom renovations; upgraded kitchen and lobbies; digital displays; elevator and escalator improvements; and much more.
These renovations will not only help maintain and attract new convention business, according to Joe D’Alessandro, president and chief executive officer of the SFCVB, but will also showcase the noteworthy elements that emblemize San Francisco.
“In its current state, the Moscone Center gives meeting attendees very little sense that they are in San Francisco,” said Dan Kelleher, chairman of the SFTID. “A major part of this renovation is incorporating recognizable colors like the Golden Gate Bridge’s ‘international orange’ and integrating the city’s iconic images into the buildings’ public spaces and meeting rooms.”
