Attracting sandcastle enthusiasts and competitors from around the world, the 46th annual Sandcastle Day at Cannon Beach spotlights the artistry and ingenuity of sandcastle and sand sculpture builders on Sat., June 19.
One of the largest events of its kind on the west coast, the event showcases hundreds of castles and sculptures created by competitive professional teams, individual sandcastle masters, local veterans, novices and other beach visitors.
Sandcastle Day began in 1964 when a tsunami washed out the bridge into Cannon Beach and residents were relatively isolated until a new bridge could be built. That spring, families from the community gathered for a sandcastle-building contest to entertain their children and attract visitors willing to brave the difficult access.
This year the action begins at 9:30 a.m., when masters begin construction of their works-of-art, followed at 10:30 a.m. when digging gets underway by casual competitors. The event culminates with an awards presentation at 1:30 p.m.
This is the only day annually when parking on the beach is allowed. Parking is free, though visitors are encouraged to bring a canned food donation in support of the Cannon Beach Community Food System. Donations will be accepted at the beach access ramp (near Mo’s Restaurant at the Tolovana Wayside). Vehicles must be moved from the beach by 3 p.m. due to the incoming tide.
Following the contest, Cannon Beach City Park hosts an open-air concert, cook-out and family fun activities from 2-5:30 p.m. Festivities are open to the public.
