Santa Fe, N.M. Spotlights Art

Santa Fe, N.M. is home to an ever-growing and influential art market and this year, the city is celebrating art of all kinds with a number of art markets—many of which are taking place consecutively.

This July, for example, Sofa West’s second annual expo of contemporary decorative arts and design in Santa Fe will take place on the same weekend as the seventh annual Santa Fe International Folk Art Market, the largest folk art market in the world. Sofa West begins on July 8 and the Folk Art Market commences on July 9. The following weekend, Art Santa Fe will celebrate its 10th Anniversary from July 15-18.

Below is a listing of art markets taking place in Santa Fe from May through December.

May 22-23
Native Treasures Indian Arts Festival
Presented by the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, this festival features more than 180 Native American artists who have been specially invited by the museum at the Santa Fe Convention Center.

July 8-11
Sofa West: Santa Fe 2010
Prominent international galleries and dealers will gather for this event, which showcases works that bridge the worlds of design, decorative and fine arts. This year marks the second year for Sofa West: Santa Fe after its successful debut in 2009.

July 9-11
Santa Fe International Folk Art Market
The largest international folk art market in the world, this annual two-day event connects international cultures as folk artists worldwide convene. The event, which takes place on Museum Hill, has been credited a major reason why Santa Fe was designated a UNESCO Creative City in Folk Art.

July 15-18
10th Annual Art Santa Fe
International and domestic galleries team up to create a powerful collection of art in a salon-booth format, with an artist-styled VIP lounge and a grand concourse. Attendees can also take part in a lecture series and numerous cultural and educational events at the Santa Fe Convention Center.

July 24-25
Traditional Spanish Market
This event highlights handmade traditional, Spanish Colonial arts crafted by more than 200 local and regional artists. It also features live music and dance, art demonstrations and regional foods and takes place in historic Santa Fe Plaza. A contemporary Hispanic Market will also be held during the same weekend.

Aug. 12-14
Whitehawk Ethnographic Art Show
This annual show features more 150 dealers, showcasing Oceanic, Pre-Columbian, Spanish Colonial, African, Oriental, Indonesian and other ethnographic art from around the world at the Santa Fe Convention Center.

Aug. 15-17
32nd Annual Whitehawk Invitational Antique Indian Art Show
As one of the largest and longest running shows for historic antique Indian art, this event features a wide range of indigenous art.

Aug. 21-22
Santa Fe Indian Market 2010
More than 1,000 Native American artists from across North America gather at this annual event, which is now in its 89th year and it considered to be the largest Native American art show and sale in the world.

Nov. 26-28
Santa Fe Indian Market Winter Showcase
This fifth annual winter edition of the summer’s market features approximately 200 artists at the Santa Fe Convention Center.

Dec. 4-5
Winter Spanish Market
This annual market features traditional Spanish Colonial artwork in such forms as straw applique, tin work and retablos at the Santa Fe Convention Center.
