The world’s oldest known equine fossil — a 52 million year old horse dubbed Dawn — is not available for public viewing, but visitors to the Touchstone Gallery, located in Scottsdale, Ariz., can view an exact replica. A resin casting in limestone of the fossil, one of six replicas created by the Field Museum, is currently on view at the gallery.
The horse was unearthed by a third generation quarry master at the rich Green River Formation on the Lewis Ranch, near Fossil Butte National Monument in Wyoming. The horse was found in a four-inch snail layer embedded in a 400-foot bluff. The fossil is estimated at 95-97 percent complete, with the tail portion out of sight.
