When the wildflowers bloom, summer activities at British Columbia’s Sun Peaks Ski Resort begin at full speed. Sun Peaks is gearing up to top summer 2012, when it broke records for visitors in one day, chairlift passengers in one day and growth in overnight occupancy for each summer month.

“Last summer, Tourism Sun Peaks, in partnership with the Sun Peaks Resort Municipality and other community partners, launched a fully loaded summer, which included events almost every weekend,” said Brandi Schier, media and marketing coordinator for Tourism Sun Peaks.

This year’s summer season, which kicks off on June 29, also features an active calendar of events that spans lifestyle, food and wine, sporting and music interests. Mountain biking is one of the resort’s main attractions, luring amateurs as well as pros. The resort boasts nearly 2,000 feet of lift-accessible vertical, 34 downhill trails and the Big Rock Ride, a new cross country mountain bike trail that debuted in the Sun Peaks Bike Park last summer. To get inspiration from the best downhill mountain bikers, visit during the Canada Cup, which takes place July 5-7.

The hills are alive with alpines during the blossom season, which is slated for July 13-Aug. 12. Chairlifts take guests up to the mountains for colorful hiking trails, dotted with wild flowers. From Aug. 3-4, Canada’s Alpine Blossom Festival takes place here, featuring live music. The resort’s Summer Concert Series takes place on July 13-14 and Aug. 31. The main acts have yet to be announced, but last year’s concerts featured Kevin Costner & Modern West as well as Matthew Good. Events launching this summer include the four-legged team North Face Dirty Feet Ultra Run & Relay and the Spartan Sprint obstacle races. The events are an added bonus for one of the resort’s real treats: golfing on the award-winning Graham Cook designed course.
