Clients looking to experience live music during their Oahu vacation will want to know about the outdoor concerts offered at Waikiki Beach Walk’s Sunday Showcase. As exemplified by the upcoming acts slated for May and June 2010, the program features artists and groups highlighting Hawaii’s diverse music scene -- everything from traditional and contemporary Hawaiian to jazz and R&B.
The free shows take place at Waikiki Beach Walk’s outdoor plaza stage every Sunday (weather permitting) from 5-6 p.m. and draw both locals and visitors, who gather on the lawn to relax and enjoy the entertainment.
Coming up on May 16 are Alan Akaka and the Islanders, whose music harks back to the days of Territorial Hawaii. Combining sweetness and swing, nostalgia and memories, the Islanders perform classic songs like Waikiki, Blue Hawaii, Sweet Leilani, Sands of Waikiki and Aloha Oe.
May 23 brings a group called Indigineous, known for its Hawaiian-style arrangements and harmonizations. Members include island entertainers Sam Ah Mook Sang, Keoni Ku and Jon Alcordo.
On May 30, clients can enjoy the art of hula performed by Halau Na Pua Mai Ka Lani. This non-competitive hula halau (school) has been performing both the ancient (Kahiko) and modern (auana) styles of hula since 2003.
The June 5 show features Corey Funai, whose unique style dubbed bluesic can often be heard with his band Bluzilla on Hawaii Public Radio and in clubs around Honolulu.
Halau Hula O Hokulani shares its own brand of hula on June 13. The talented troupe has participated in dance festivals throughout Hawaii and around the world.
Audiences get a chance to hear one of Hawaii's living musical treasures on June 19 when Aunty Nikki Hines graces the Waikiki Beach Walk stage. She promises a one-of-a-kind show of Hawaiian music, dance, storytelling and aloha.
Jimmy Funai, a respected musician throughout Hawaii’s jazz and blues circles and recognized as one of Hawaii’s greatest guitarists, entertains the crowds on June 27. He has performed on national TV shows and continues to play locally with jazz luminaries.
An Outrigger Enterprises Group project, the eight-acre retail/hotel/entertainment complex of Waikiki Beach Walk is bordered by Kalakaua Ave., Lewers St., Kalia Rd., Beach Walk and Saratoga Rd.
