Portland Walking Tours has launched a savory new itinerary called Flavor Street.
Flavor Street helps the curious food explorer nibble, sip and taste the city’s best food carts, tasting trucks and hidden kitchens dotting the cityscape. The two-hour walk features over a half-dozen samples of cuisines, ranging from local to international, as well as new takes on comfort food that change seasonally.
"With over 700 food carts now operating in Portland, people increasingly ask us which ones are best,'" says Portland Walking Tours' David Schargel. "Our resident experts (aka tour guides) were already immersed in the local foodie scene due to their experience with our Epicurean Excursion and Chocolate Decadence tours, so Flavor Street is a natural next step for us."
In addition to providing all of the tastings, the company's guides relate fascinating stories, anecdotes and fun facts, such as how to truly eat like a local with these mobile gourmet kitchens; the difference between pods, carts and trucks, and why Portland's pod system works so well; the amazing stories of the carts' proprietors, from struggling immigrants to culinary school drop-outs to former four-star restaurant chefs; the history of the neighborhood and the nibbles; and how to eat the best and skip the rest.
Offered at 1 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays year-round, the two-hour Flavor Street tour begins at the Mark Spencer hotel and is limited to groups of 16 people per tour to preserve the flexible and personal nature of the walk.
All the tastes are included in the $45 per person price. Private tours are available by arrangement.
