Waikiki Welcomes Ocean Front Pampering

Sep 23, 2008

When Moana Lani, Waikiki’s newest spa, opens on Oct. 1 at the Moana Surfrider, it promises pampering relaxation steeped in Hawaiian health and wellness techniques.

The 16,000 square-foot oceanfront full-service spa features two couples treatment suites with private ocean front lanai and whirlpool tubs; eight custom massage therapy rooms; two body treatment rooms; a Vichy shower water therapy room; three custom facial rooms; and a 24- hour state-of-the-art Westin WorkOut fitness center.

“We are thrilled to be a part of the exclusive Heavenly Spa by Westin collection with the opening of Moana Lani,” said Erik Berger, general manager of the Moana Surfrider, a Westin Resort. “Moana Lani will offer signature Heavenly Spa by Westin treatments, but it will also incorporate indigenous Hawaiian healing rituals.”

Following are a few of its signature treatments:

Rollerssage, an exclusive treatment available only at  select Heavenly Spa by Westin facilities, combines the elements of massage, heat and energy creating a balanced feeling of body, mind and spirit.  Stone spheres are fitted into an ergonomically designed massage tool that evenly applies stroke pressure to the body. Each stone represents a healing property, such as circulatory, digestive and harmony.

Traditional Hawaiian lomi lomi ola massage includes a healing prayer chanted at the beginning and completion of the treatment. A combination of long strokes and rhythmic massage movements induce relaxation and a sense of overall well-being.

Practitioners have trained with kumu (teachers) whose lineage is traced back generations.

Ka Ua Lomi, a gentle rain massage, incorporates the warm  waters of the Vichy shower. Falling water relaxes and massages the body with selected island essences.

Heavenly Massage, a signature Heavenly Spa by Westin  offering, begins with a heated compress to ease muscles, before a choice of essential oils is massaged into the body.  Relaxation comes from the harmonious balance of scent and touch.

Each treatment room at Moana Lani features a wood bowl with indigenous alaea (Hawaiian sea salt), known for its healing and restorative abilities.  At the start of the treatment, guests are invited to leave their worries at the door of the treatment room.

This is done by placing their troubles in the wood bowl filled with alaea. Once the treatment is completed, the salt is placed in a collection bowl. At the end of the day the salt is thrown into the ocean, allowing the guests’ troubles to be blessed and carried out to sea.

The Moana Lani is one of only 12 Heavenly Spa by Westin resort spas worldwide.  Of the 12 spas, three are located in Hawaii – at the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas, Westin Maui Resort and Spa, and the Moana Surfrider.
