The Zion National Park Foundation will host the fourth annual In the Footsteps of Thomas Moran Plein Air Art Invitational, Nov. 4-12. The event will bring together 25 of the country’s top landscape artists to paint in the picturesque places throughout Zion Canyon where Moran once sketched.
Park visitors will have several opportunities to witness the artists at work in the park and attend lectures about art and nature. Two day-long workshops will be available for those looking for a more in-depth art education experience. Many events are free, but fees will be charged for workshops and the number of participants will be limited.
Participating artists include William Scott Jennings (Boulder, Colo.), Peter Nisbet (Sante Fe, N.M), Kate Starling (Rockville, Utah), Mike Kowalski (Norland, Wash.), Michael Obermeyer (Laguna Beach, Calif.), Dave Santillanes (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Kathleen Strukoff (Las Vegas, Nev.).
An exhibit of the artists’ studio work will hang in the Zion Human History Museum for a month before the event. Invited artists will arrive in the canyon on Nov. 4 and paint through Nov. 12. Site maps will be available for visitors indicating where they can view the artists at work.
The artists’ creations will go on sale at the Zion Nature Center from Nov. 10-12. Proceeds from the event go to the Zion National Park Foundation and support important projects in Zion National Park. This year, funds raised by the event will support Zion’s ongoing Art in the Park programs and the park’s Youth Education Initiative.
