From Oct. 5-9, the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) hosted its Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) in Puerto Varas, Chile. With the theme “Viva la Revolucion de la Aventura,” the 12th annual summit welcomed 700 delegates from 55 countries.
The opening session of ATWS saw keynote presentations from speakers such as conservation giant Doug Tompkins and Elizabeth Becker, author of "Overbooked: The Exploding Business of Travel and Tourism." Michelle Bachelet, president of Chile, was a surprise guest at the conference, and she spoke to the crowd about her administration’s commitment to developing new sustainable tourism areas around the country and teaching English and Portuguese to tourism workers to help promote Chile as an international destination.
Prior to the event, many attendees took part in pre-summit adventures in places such as Patagonia, Easter Island and the Atacama Desert.
