What: 132 Million Americans Are Expected to Travel This Fourth of July
A new survey from The Vacationer indicates that 132 million American adults (51%) plan to travel for the Fourth of July holiday this year. When it comes to the question of budgets, 32% say they will spend $500 or more on flights, hotels, tickets, gas and other travel expenses. Most respondents plan to travel by car (37%), though nearly 29 million Americans (11%) plan to fly.
Why It Matters: Holiday Travel Is Making a Comeback
The Vacationer’s poll adds to the recent evidence that traveler confidence is growing in the U.S., as COVID-19 cases decline and vaccinations rise. The number of Americans planning to travel for the upcoming holiday is 3.5 times higher than those who traveled for July Fourth last year, and nearly double the number of people who traveled for Memorial Day (27%), according to the survey.
Fast Facts:
- According to the poll, 27% of Americans traveled for Memorial Day this year, while 15% traveled for Easter. This means more people are planning to travel for the Fourth of July than Memorial Day and Easter combined.
- Only 3.56% of respondents plan to travel by bus or train.
- More than 17% (44 million people) plan to spend more than $1,000 on Fourth of July travel.
- When asked what activities participants will take part in over the holiday, the most popular response was a barbecue or cookout (73%), followed by fireworks (61%), the beach (29%), the lake (22%) and a parade (16%).
- Almost two out of three adults still rate COVID-19 as “slightly a concern” or “a big concern” as they plan for the Fourth of July, indicating that even as Americans return to traveling, the pandemic will still factor into their decisions.
