As you can read in our cover story, it’s time for our annual look ahead to the coming year. Like so many in the media, we do our best at this time of year to make predictions on the trends and factors that will influence the travel industry in 2025 — with the caveat that, these days in particular, it seems like there is no shortage of surprises lurking ahead.
In general, we are seeing positive indicators for the coming year. Prices are normalizing throughout the industry, even as demand remains high. More airline capacity points to more affordable flights. The luxury end of the market continues to reach historic marks, while new cruise ships and exciting itineraries have brought people back to the waterways.
Now that we are exiting the “post-COVID-19” era — and considering all this market optimism — is it too soon to ask if the pandemic taught our industry some good lessons?
It certainly showed us how important it is to diversify our offerings; to be prepared to turn on a dime; and to rely on our colleagues and communities. We are all more resilient and creative now, after looking for new ways to stay in business and remain optimistic. Most of all, not being able to travel reminded everyone how much we all love to travel. While I think the “revenge travel” motivation is no longer what it was just after the pandemic, it’s clear that people are not giving up on their bucket lists anytime soon. Just look at the solo travel trend: People are happy to hit the road alone if that’s what it takes to see the world.
So, while 2025 will continue to get us back to “normal” in some ways, we are probably all forever changed by what we went through. And when it comes to travel, those changes equate to a desire for more dream trips whenever possible.
