For vacationers who miss their beloved pets, Maui Humane Society (MHS) has introduced a pair of initiatives designed to bring visitors nose-to-nose with homeless animals. During the Helping Paws program each Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, clients can walk and wash dogs, brush cats or play with puppies and kittens. Since Maui has a limited resident population and a shortage of homes for orphaned pets, travelers also can volunteer for the Wings of Aloha program, where a mainland-adopted shelter pet accompanies them on their return flight to be picked up by a partner agency. Visitors can even adopt their own pet from MHS and bring it back home at the end of their trip. Set in central Maui, MHS takes in approximately 10,000 animals each year.
