Kimchi Tradition Gets UNESCO Designation

Jan 05, 2014
Lovers of fermented cabbage rejoice — Korea’s gimjang culture has recently been added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List. Gimjang refers to the preparation of large quantities of kimchi to eat throughout the winter season. The production process takes place between late fall and early winter, when fresh vegetables are still abundant. Gimjang is an annual tradition that involves a gathering of family, friends and community members to make and share kimchi. This communal spirit and the sense of sharing, as well as the creative recipe involved in gimjang, were factors that contributed to its designation by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage last month. english.visitkorea.or.kr
