How to Plan a Luxury Vacation in St. Kitts and Nevis: Hotels, Activities and More

How to Plan a Luxury Vacation in St. Kitts and Nevis: Hotels, Activities and More

Lots of Caribbean destinations offer upscale accommodations and experiences. But in St. Kitts and Nevis, travelers can indulge in ways that make the most of the dual-island nation’s remarkable natural beauty while also connecting with the area’s fascinating history and culture.

I discovered a variety of unique ways to experience St. Kitts and Nevis during my recent visit. My main takeaway: This decidedly photogenic destination offers even more than I expected.

What Makes St. Kitts and Nevis Different

Officially known as the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, this sun-soaked, twin-island nation is unique for several reasons. For starters, it’s the smallest independent nation in the Western Hemisphere — and one of the smallest in the world, too. St. Kitts was the first Caribbean island to be permanently settled by both the English and the French, and the two islands gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1983.

Another thing that makes St. Kitts and Nevis special, in my opinion, is the consistently beautiful landscape. Sure, a memorable view is often just a short drive away in much of the Caribbean. But in St. Kitts and Nevis, I found that a spectacular vista graced nearly every place I visited. Thanks to the islands’ compact size, I was always close to verdant mountains, the sparkling Caribbean Sea and the vast Atlantic Ocean — and I could often spot neighboring islands such as St. Eustatius, Saba and even St. Maarten.

I also discovered that in St. Kitts and Nevis, an indulgent vacation can start right after landing. Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, the main point of entry for most non-cruise passengers, is an easy-to-navigate facility, but the arrival experience is even better when you reserve the concierge services of private air terminal KayanJet. As soon as I descended the air stairs, a KayanJet representative on the tarmac greeted me and whisked me in a Porsche SUV to the company’s nearby terminal, where I enjoyed a free drink and light lunch in a lovely lounge as the staff processed my customs and immigration forms. In addition to VIP arrival services, the company offers departure and ground transportation services.

Luxury Hotels in St. Kitts

During my visit, I stayed at St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino, which has a conveniently central location just minutes from the airport and the capital city of Basseterre. The expansive beach and spacious rooms are additional selling points, and travelers looking to indulge can opt for suite and villa accommodations.

I also toured Park Hyatt St. Kitts Christophe Harbour, which is likely the island’s most luxurious hotel. The pristine property, set beautifully at the southern tip of St. Kitts, features handsome accommodations, excellent cuisine and a nice spa; there’s also a private pier that makes it easy to arrange transportation to nearby Nevis.

Another noteworthy option in St. Kitts is Belle Mont Sanctuary Resort, a picturesque hotel where the cottages and villas offer stunning views from their hillside setting. High ceilings, handcrafted furnishings and gourmet cuisine are among the draws here.

Speaking of dining, I also enjoyed the culinary offerings — as well as the ambience — at Palm Court Gardens & Restaurant, which serves a sophisticated menu on the grounds of a former residence overlooking Basseterre Bay; day passes are available to use the facility’s swimming pool. I found the international menu at Carambola Beach Club, equally rewarding — during the day, patrons can reserve a spot on the beach.

Things to Do in St. Kitts

The St. Kitts Scenic Railway provided me with a perfect introduction to the island’s beauty and history. The narrated excursion — which takes place onboard double-decker train cars that follow tracks originally laid for the destination’s once-lucrative sugar industry — also offers photo-worthy views.

Panoramic views are just one of the reasons to visit Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched dramatically atop a hill on the island’s Caribbean side. Construction on this British-designed fort began in 1690 using labor from enslaved people. Exhibits within the fort highlight various aspects of St. Kitts’ history.

The island’s former reliance on sugar production is visible in the remains of multiple sugar plantations that dot the island; a few have been reimagined as interesting attractions. At Romney Manor and Wingfield Estate, for example, we visited Caribelle Batik, where I tried my hand at creating my own batik design, and the Old Road Rum Company, where I sampled tasty spirits created at a distillery with roots that go back to 1681.

Luxury Hotels in Nevis

Located just minutes by boat from St. Kitts, the island of Nevis is home to several hotels that stand out for luxurious amenities and unique settings.

The island’s highest-profile luxury resort is Four Seasons Resort Nevis, West Indies, which sits on a lovely stretch of coastline and features sumptuous accommodation options that range from oceanview rooms to a five-bedroom estate house.

was especially interested in exploring the multiple hotels that are set on the grounds of former sugar plantations. The Montpelier, for example, offers private dining experiences in its 300-year-old sugar mill and also features sea-view bungalows, an attractive swimming pool and a private beach club that’s about 15 minutes away by car. Princess Diana’s stay at Montpelier in 1992 boosted awareness of this hotel’s charms.

Also set on the grounds of a former sugar plantation is Golden Rock Inn, where lush vegetation provides a dramatic backdrop for historic stone structures. Eye-catching modern art and furnishings, meanwhile, hint at the owners’ creative style. The 19th-century former sugar mill at this property has been converted into a two-story guest space that can accommodate two adults and two children.

The Hermitage, meanwhile, is another postcard-perfect option in Nevis; its original building is described as the Caribbean’s oldest wooden house, and its variety of guestrooms, cottages and villas are spread out amid quaint gardens.

How to Explore St. Kitts and Nevis

During my visit to St. Kitts and Nevis, some of our group activities were organized by Sunlinc, a DMC specializing in events and also offering some leisure services. Another DMC is Kantours, which offers a wide variety of vacation experiences, including catamaran excursions, island tours and ATV rides.

Travel advisors may also want to contact the St. Kitts Tourism Authority, which offers a Destination Specialist program with educational tools and a variety of benefits for those who become certified St. Kitts experts.
