Rotterdam Receives New Enhancements

Jan 11, 2010

In December, Holland America Line’s Rotterdam emerged from a 28-day drydock with dramatic new Signature of Excellence enhancements and amenities including new staterooms, the Mix lounge, Retreat Pool and the Showroom at Sea.

An additional 44 staterooms were added to the Rotterdam, including the 39 new Lanai design cabins that open directly onto the promenade, as well as balcony and inside accommodations. Twenty-three of Rotterdam’s staterooms near the spa on the Verandah Deck are now designated spa staterooms with a variety of enhanced spa amenities. All accommodations throughout the ship were refreshed with new decor, carpeting and soft goods, while bathrooms have new vanities and cabinetry.

The aft section of the Lido deck has a new resort-style pool called The Retreat. With a shallow area where guests can lounge in chairs and dip their toes in the water, the new pool area includes a bar, the Slice pizzeria and a giant LED screen for evening movies.

A new canopy and windscreens provide additional covered seating for the Lido Restaurant. In the evenings, a portion of the restaurant is transformed into Canaletto, a complimentary specialty restaurant with glass partitions and an Italian ambiance, open for dinner from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

At midship, the Casino and Piano bars were reconfigured into a multi-themed area called Mix with three separate bars — Martinis, Champagne and Spirits & Ales. The casino itself was redesigned and the main show lounge was transformed into the Showroom at Sea with the ambiance of a glamorous nightclub and a new slate of shows. Carpets were replaced in most public areas, and an upscale jewelry shop called Merabella was added.

HAL’s Veendam received similar Signature of Excellence enhancements last April and the Maasdam, Ryndam and Statendam are scheduled to have the same features after a series of drydocks. In 2010 and 2011, the three ships will receive Mix, Showroom at Sea, Canaletto and other public area enhancements, along with stateroom upgrades. The second series of drydocks in 2012 and 2013 will add The Retreat and new staterooms aft, as well as forward verandah and spa staterooms.
