Family Vacation Journal: My Trip to Greece

I went to Greece with my parents over New Year’s, and we visited many places. We stayed in Athens and Nafplio, and we took some daytrips out from those cities. We chose Greece for our vacation because I love Greek mythology. My favorite goddess is Artemis, but while I was in Greece, I got very into the demigod Asclepius.

There are some basic facts you should know when visiting Greece. I am a vegetarian, but it was easy to find things to eat. You should be fine there with whatever kind of food you eat — they had a lot of seafood and meat, too. My favorite were the rolls at a restaurant we went to in Athens. They were made of phyllo dough and filled with goat cheese and sundried tomatoes from the island of Santorini.

Another thing you might want to know is that there are small shrines all over the country on the side of the road. One of our guides told me that some of them are memorials for people who died in car crashes, and sometimes they were just little places to pray. It’s fun to look for them on long road trips. They look like tiny churches that fairies could live in.

Our first tour was the Acropolis of Athens. You might think that the only acropolis is in Athens. Though Athens does have one, an acropolis is actually the highest point in an ancient Greek city. There are several temples and two cool theaters at the Athens Acropolis. I took a picture next to the Temple of Athena Nike when I was wearing my Nike shoes. (She’s the goddess of victory.)

The Theatre of Dionysus could seat 17,000 people! After visiting the Acropolis of Athens, we drove out to the Temple of Poseidon. This one was on the Aegean Sea on Cape Sounion. I saw some cute little partridges there, and the temple was very beautiful. The weather was slightly stormy when we were there; I guess Poseidon was mad!

Delphi was another place we visited. It’s high in the mountains and famous for the oracle Pythia. People came from all over to ask her questions, so Delphi was an important place.

Then, we visited Nafplio. It’s a beautiful town on the coast in the Peloponnese region of Greece. It was a little old-fashioned village with the sea, mountains and castles around it. My hotel there was up a series of stairs and then another set of stairs. You can’t drive a car right up to it. The alleys and streets in Nafplio were so cute.

Finally, from Nafplio, we took a trip to Olympia, where the first Olympics were held.

My trip was amazing. If you take a trip to Greece, I recommend all the places I saw. When I come back to Greece, I want to learn more and visit more places like the islands off the coast of Greece.
