As a child, Alice Horn rarely went on vacation. With a parent on the autism spectrum, it was difficult to find a suitable place to stay.
Families living with autism often can’t enjoy a worry-free trip. Creating a safe space where families can experience new things was always on Horn’s mind. Now, she’s the CEO for VillaKey, what she calls “the Airbnb for families living with autism.”
What is VillaKey?
VillaKey provides sensory-friendly homes for families with autism. Our homes start with supportive property managers. Then, we look for fragrance-free homes with soft, neutral colors, gentle lighting and alarms on exits. In the near future, we hope to offer our clients a concierge service, too.
How do you assist families with planning their trips?
We provide educational tools and a travel checklist to help families set their expectations and prepare before they leave.
What communities do you serve?
Orlando, Fla., is ground zero, but we’re also in Miami and Colorado. We’re in the midst of a national expansion, and as we continue to branch out, we’ll look for locations with autism-friendly attractions.
How do you work with travel agents?
We are thrilled to work with agents, and these families really need the support of an agent. We offer commissions and discount codes, and we are always looking for more autism travel ambassadors.
