Blazing Trails

Maunalei Arboretum Trail
at Kapalua Resort
New hiking trails and a plethora of packages make Kapalua Resort a good choice for Maui vacations this fall.

The 23,000-acre master-planned destination has been developing over 100 miles of footpaths, the first two of which opened in late August. Called the Village Walking Trail and Maunalei Arboretum Trail, the walkways cater to all fitness levels and come with no admission.

“There’s a real lack of hiking resources island-wide,” said Yarrow Flower, development coordinator for Kapalua owner Maui Land and Pineapple Company. “Our vision for the 100-mile trail system is to give residents and visitors the opportunity to experience the natural beauty of Maui in a unique setting. To be able to share this with the community is important to us.”

As clients explore the Village Walking Trail, they follow the established system of cart paths and roadways located on Kapalua’s former Village Golf Course. At the top of the course await stunning panoramic views of the neighboring islands and a hidden lake with ducks. Clients should check in at the Kapalua Logo Shop for this self-guided experience.

The more remote Maunalei Arboretum Trail begins above Plantation Estates in a three-mile series of loops. Along the way, hikers encounter Kapalua’s 80-year-old arboretum, home of plant and tree species from around the world. Hardy clients can continue along a challenging portion of the route that leads up the mountainside for a glimpse of breathtaking Puu Kukui Watershed Preserve. Three times daily, Kapalua Resort offers complimentary shuttle service to the Maunalei Arboretum trailhead. For clients who decide to make the resort their home-base during their trip to the Valley Isle, Kapalua Villas has come up with several vacation packages for travel through Dec. 19. With the Three For Free Special, for instance, guests booking a four-night stay get the fifth night free, a $100 activity certificate and admission to a pineapple plantation tour. Rates start at $269 per night for a one-bedroom fairway-view villa.

When booking the Kapalua Free Ride package, guests staying at least five nights get a mid-sized rental car (from $289 per night).

The Stay and Play Your Way package comes with a mid-sized rental car for the duration of the visit. Clients also get a daily choice of golf at the Plantation or Bay Course; one-hour instruction at Kapalua’s Golf Academy; or a 55-minute in-villa massage (from $281 per person per night).

For couples, the five-night Kuuipo (romance) package provides a rental car, flower lei greeting, welcome champagne and chocolates, roundtrip limo transfers with an open bar, a rose petal turndown and the pineapple plantation tour ($1,165 per person).

Golfers, meanwhile, can book the four-night Building a Better Game in Paradise promotion, with rental car, three days of golf lessons and a 15 percent discount on golf merchandise (from $1,887 per person).

The five-night Tennis For Life package gives clients unlimited court time, one private lesson, a choice of three group programs, 10 percent merchandise discount, “Tennis For Life” book and logo tennis balls (from $769 per person).
