HAWAII ISLAND
10.8: Ironman Triathlon World Championship. Some 2,000 athletes converge for this grueling sporting event composed of a 2.4-mile ocean swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run. Spectators cheer from the side of the race course, which begins and ends in Kailua-Kona.

10.16: Taste of Hilo. Featuring the talents of east-side chefs and bakers, this 18th annual fest will take place in Sangha Hall and showcase local specialties such as Big Island abalone, Hamakua mushrooms and island-made beverages. Proceeds support Hawaii Community College’s food service program.

10.6-9: Maui County Fair. The granddaddy of Hawaii fairs takes place at War Memorial Complex in Wailuku and features rides, games, horticulture, livestock, arts and crafts and a food court with island specialties prepared by nonprofit groups.
