The core of Hawaii's indigenous culture is the ohana (family), and a new company is tapping into that foundation with cultural programs for the whole family.
Hawaii's Cultural Connection (HCC) has launched one-of-a-kind activities for families who like to learn and try new things together. Cultural specialist Denise Moreland created the adventures in response to what she saw as a need for more authentic visitor experiences in the destination.
After studying with some of Hawaii's most recognized elders, Moreland has crafted programs such as the Deeper Meaning of Aloha, Hawaiian Hospitality, Hawaiian Spirituality, Hula for the Ohana, Understanding the Symbol, Making and Giving of the Lei, and the Ohana Story of Taro and Its Meaning to the Hawaiian People.
Families can learn about the ancient battle for unification of the Hawaiian islands atop the Nuuanu Pali. They can go in-depth into the Pearl Harbor or visit taro fields and possibly work in them and pound poi.
Other topics include ancient Hawaiian fishponds, and the use of food to understand the circle of life from the Hawaiian perspective. Moreland will eventually introduce programs such as a cultural children's treasure hunt and the ancient martial art of lua.
In most instances, programs take clients to the outdoor classroom where the knowledge is shared. Each activity is presented by a specialist who is educated in that particular field of endeavor.
