Kauai is known as Hawaii’s Island of Discovery for good reason.
With its celebrated hiking, “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,”
jungle-like rivers and endless stretches of sand, it’s an adventure
lover’s dream. So there’s little surprise that the readers of
Travel + Leisure Magazine (US) have ranked Kauai as the
number one island in Hawaii in the category of “World’s Best
Islands.”
Kauai Mayor Bryan Baptiste is especially proud of the recognition
due to its source. “Because this honor is voted on by travelers,
being named ‘Hawaii’s Best Island’ is a wonderful reflection on
Kauai’s communities, the people and the aloha they share with our
visitors,” Mayor Baptiste stated. “I commend our visitor industry
for its dedication and hard work on behalf of our island home.”
One of the travel industry’s preeminent publications, Travel +
Leisure surveyed its readership during the first quarter of
2006 to determine the results for its “World’s Best Islands” poll.
Re-spondents judged the islands based on natural attractions,
activities/sights, restaurants/food, people and value.
Nicknamed the Garden Island, Kauai flourishes with
lush flora that runs from the mountains to the ocean. It offers
more than 50 miles of white sand beaches more beach per mile than
any other island in Hawaii. Only three percent of the island is
developed for commercial and residential use.
Kelly Hoen, chair of the Kauai Visitors Bureau (KVB), noted that
Kauai’s tropical diversity makes the island special - an aspect
obviously identified by T + L readers.
“Kauai is the Hawaii that everyone dreams about,” Hoen pointed
out. “You can bask on a wide-open beach and minutes later find
yourself hiking through a tropical rainforest. Travelers are always
struck by our abundance of natural beauty, and I think it showed in
this year’s survey.”
