Lovers of Hawaiian dance won’t want to miss the annual Moku O Keawe International Hula Festival, slated for Nov. 3-5. Held at Waikoloa Beach Resort on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii’s Big Island, the festival features top-notch women’s troupes from Hawaii, the U.S. mainland and Japan competing in solo and group performances of ancient and modern dance styles. The venue is the Waikoloa Bowl at Queens’ Garden, an outdoor amphitheater with a lawn and reserved seating.
In addition, visitors can attend Moku O Keawe’s extensive Hawaii Marketplace, which provides opportunities to see, touch, smell and taste made-in-Hawaii products from island vendors. While there, they can peruse and purchase leis of various weaves, hula implements, aloha wear and jewelry, fine arts and wood works.
The festival is presented by Moku O Keawe Foundation, a private nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing, enriching and educating the practice and development of hula and its associated arts. In keeping with its educational mission — to “build, strengthen and inspire the living cultural traditions of Hawaii” — the festival features intensive hands-on workshops in hula, chant, crafting of musical instruments and related topics, taught by noted practitioners. Clients can also go on excursions to cultural sites.
