Outrigger Reef on the Beach to Undergo Major Revitalization

Outrigger Enterprises Group is investing $100 million to revitalize the oceanfront Outrigger Reef on the Beach in Waikiki. 

Plans call for tearing down an existing five-story structure located on the beach, which will dramatically increase ocean views. In its place, Outrigger will create 34,000 square feet of open recreation space with swimming pools, landscaped lounging areas and open-air dining facilities. 

As part of the revitalization, a new tower — set back from the shoreline along Kalia Road — will add more than 200 hotel rooms to the property.

“The revitalization of Outrigger Reef on the Beach represents the first new beachfront full-service hotel rooms in Waikiki in 30 years,” said David Carey, president of Outrigger Enterprises Group. “Waikiki Beach is an iconic travel destination and we anticipate great demand for these brand new rooms.” 

Travel agents will benefit by having a new selection of commissionable, high-quality, ocean-facing rooms to offer clients, Carey noted. 

The new tower at Outrigger Reef on the Beach will be part of the Outrigger Expert Agent program, offering certified travel agents a number of booking incentives, from cash bonuses to customized welcome amenities. 

“We’re still in the planning stages for this revitalization, but we envision hosting fam trips for agents to experience the enhanced property firsthand when built,” said Carey.

Incorporation of Hawaiian culture, music and history will remain prominent throughout the property and guest experience. 

Carey said that he expects the new hotel rooms to attract both new visitors and returning Outrigger Reef on the Beach guests. 

“We know that our returning guests will be excited to come back to their favorite beachfront hotel for more of the authentic cultural experience Outrigger is known for, and to enjoy the new rooms, upgraded pools and recreation deck,” Carey said. 

When the project is completed in 2019, the hotel will also offer 15,000 square feet of new meeting space.

“We anticipate strong interest from meeting planners looking for state-of-the-art conference facilities for small to medium-size conferences and other meetings,” Carey said.

The revitalization comes at a time when reductions in the number of hotel rooms and conversions to condotels are regularly announced in Waikiki. 

“Outrigger recognizes the importance of creating more full-service hotel rooms in Waikiki to support tourism, our state’s number one industry,” Carey said.
