Visitors to Oahu’s North Shore are promised the scariest canoe ride of their lives at the Haunted Lagoon, an annual tradition at Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC). Running through Oct. 30, the Halloween attraction drew some 44,000 guests last year and this year, the PCC has turned up the terror with new creatures and revamped effects.
The story and theme of the ride revolve around the legend of the Laie Lady. As the story goes, she is the restless, vengeful spirit of a young woman dressed in white who went insane following a tragedy many years ago. She now wanders the lagoon seeking revenge for her murdered husband and searching for her lost son.
Of course, the Haunted Lagoon is not for the faint of heart. For that reason, PCC also offers a milder keiki (children’s) canoe ride centered around a lost warrior who carries a mystical light staff that repels monsters or creatures.
Through Oct. 23, canoes depart every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday beginning at 6:30 p.m. From Oct. 25-30, canoes run from Monday through Saturday (closed on Halloween). The box office is open from 4-8 p.m., or until tickets sell out. Booking Haunted Lagoon tickets in advance is strongly recommended, as limited space is available.
“The Haunted Lagoon is a great way for the entire family to get into the Halloween spirit a little early this year,” said PCC director of marketing Raymond Magalei. “Last year, Haunted Lagoon was tremendously popular. As a result, we have added the option to book tickets online, which saves time and shows if seats have sold out on a particular night.”
This is the third year for the Haunted Lagoon at PCC, which was founded in 1963. Over the decades, the popular attraction has welcomed more than 34 million visitors, while preserving and portraying the culture, arts and crafts of Polynesia for the rest of the world.
Haunted Lagoon tickets are $25 per adult and $20 per child. Guests can also purchase tickets to a fast pass line for a shorter wait. Clients who bring in a Pepsi product on Wednesdays get $5 off admission, and participating 7-Eleven locations will provide coupons for $3 discounts.
