Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages

Nov 01, 2009

Papayas grow prolifically on the grounds of Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages and, every day, a basket full of the luscious yellow fruit is placed on the front desk for guests to enjoy. Three times each week, kupuna (Hawaiian elders) gather with visitors for crafts and talk-story sessions. And, on Wednesday through Friday evenings, expect live island music wafts through stands of elegant palms.

Those are the sort of touches that set apart Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages from other accommodations on Kauai. Drowsing in a deep-rooted 27-acre coconut grove on the island’s west side, the property takes clients to a bygone era where the hosts are gracious and the aloha spirit flows freely.

That aura of nostalgia is further reflected in Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages’ distinctive accommodations, created from restored historic sugar plantation homes, which have been updated with modern conveniences and period furnishings of mahogany, rattan or wicker. Hugged by a black sand beach, the property appeals to clients who are actively seeking out authentic island pastimes.

“Our close proximity to Waimea Canyon and the Na Pali Coast makes the cottages perfect for ecotours, adventure and health and wellness vacations,” said Stephanie Iona, who has served as Aston Waimea Plantation Cottages’ general manager for the past four years. “Our peaceful atmosphere makes it an ideal venue to bring groups together as a team and achieve business goals. In addition, many guests come to us to experience their dream Hawaiian wedding in a setting of 100-year-old banyan trees and coconut palms.”

While the property prides itself on its timelessness, it doesn’t lose sight of the needs of contemporary travelers. Its 61 one- to four-bedroom dwellings come with kitchens, televisions, telephones and stereos, and most have a private lanai and outdoor sitting area. A day spa provides massage services, and clients can dine at the property’s new Grove Cafe presented by Waimea Brewing Company.

The only hotel in the Waimea area, the cottages are located on lands owned by the heirs of Kauai sugar pioneer Hans Peter Faye, who started his plantation in the 1880s.

“The property’s strong heritage, along with all the wonderful support we receive from the Waimea community, allows us to provide truly unique and memorable experiences for our guests,” said Iona. “Thanks to our very special location, we turn back the clock to simpler times. I love being able to share the feeling of old Hawaii with visitors.”
