Hitting the Links at Moon Palace

Oct 05, 2004
Golfers are invited to compete in the Moon Palace Classic golf tournament scheduled for Oct. 25-30 in Cancun at the Golf Club at Moon Palace and the Golf Club at Playacar.

The Moon Palace’s recently opened, 7,201-yard Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course is a par 72 with four sets of tees offering a challenge for all skill levels. Players must navigate the native Mayan vegetation and natural wetland waste bunkers. Hole 17 is a 141-yard par 3 that plays to an island green.

The golf course at Playacar was inaugurated in 1994. The Robert von Hagge-designed course is a 7,202-yard layout that incorporates more than 200 Mayan ruins. The course has a slope rating of 148 from championship tees, 136 from white tees, and 134 from red tees. Tournament play will occur simultaneously at both courses.

“The Moon Palace Classic Tournament exemplifies Cancun’s growing appeal as a golf destination. We are very excited to host it, and expect to attract golfers from around the globe,” said Roberto Chapur, president of Palace Resorts.

The tournament is a scramble format for four players with a minimum handicap of 60 per team. The enrollment fee is $500 per person, and sign-up forms are available at www.palaceresorts.com.

Prizes for a hole-in-one at each course include a luxury car. Players closest to pin could win a Rolex and/or a Cartier watch. All winners will receive trophies, but the first place winner could also receive four complimentary weeks at Palace Resorts; second place gets three complimentary weeks; and third place gets two complimentary weeks. Contestants will also have a chance to participate in a raffle for a golf cart by EZGO Nicklaus, and other surprise prizes, such as rugs, jewelry, greens fees and more.

The Moon Palace was the site of the 2003 American Express tour de Las Americas in December 2003. It also held the fourth edition of the Mexican Open, and it is among the possible sites for the European Tour in coming years.

The Moon Palace one of 10 Palace Resorts in Cancun, the Riviera Maya, Cozumel and Nuevo Vallarta offers all-inclusive packages that include accommodations, taxes and tips, all meals and snacks, domestic and imported beverages, non-motorized watersports, nightly entertainment and select tours. Golf packages are also available.
