Hotel Review: The Lodge at Kukuiula

When it comes to togethering, Kukuiula covers all the bases. Blending freestanding accommodations with a wealth of perks, the south Kauai community appeals to traveling families and friends who prefer home-away-from-home digs to hotels.

Kukuiula consists of a collection of cottages, villas and bungalows at once upscale and island-style. All of the dwellings feature large living spaces, high-end kitchens, dining areas, lanais and private outdoor showers. Although it’s an exclusive club, transient guests can rent homes there through its hospitality component — called The Lodge at Kukuiula — which gives them access to its many amenities.

“We’re all about meeting our guests’ needs,” said Veronica Lovesy, Kukuiula’s senior marketing manager. “We can customize everything from activities to spa treatments.”

For instance, through Kukuiula’s Island Pursuits program, clients can get to know Kauai during guided, tailor-made excursions such as traditional Hawaiian canoe sailing and hiking the Kalalau Trail.

Kukuiula’s social and recreational centerpiece is the 21,000-square-foot Plantation House, an oceanview hub with expansive porches and breezy interiors. Clients can gather there for coffee, cocktails and meals, fun in the game room and swimming in the pools.

Guests who are interested in sustainability gravitate to Kukuiula’s 13-acre communal farm, where they can pick their own seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers and attend monthly farm-to-table dinners. Clients can also go swimming, kayaking and fishing in the farm’s 20-acre lake.

For golfers, Kukuiula provides a private 18-hole course designed by Tom Weiskopf. Meanwhile, health-and-wellness buffs can indulge in its 18,000-square-foot spa boasting indoor/outdoor treatment rooms, lava-rock saunas, hot and cold plunge pools, yoga and fitness facilities and a lap pool.

Rounding out the experience is the village-like Shops at Kukuiula, where visitors can buy organic groceries and check out specialty galleries, retailers and restaurants. A sense of community permeates the complex on Wednesday afternoons during farmers’ markets, complete with live music and a beer and wine garden. From start to finish, Kukuiula presents a total package of togethering treats.

Bungalows are priced from $750, cottages from $1,000 and villas from $1,700. Agent commission is 5 percent.
