The third Ke Kumu ‘O Mauna Lani (Mauna Lani, The
Source) retreat will kick off June 8, 2006 at Mauna Lani Bay Hotel
& Bungalows and Mauna Lani Spa at the Mauna Lani Resort.
The cultural and spa retreat will feature four days
of workshops and interactive seminars led by Hawaiian and
internationally acclaimed masters in living healthy, mindful and
spiritually fulfilling lives. The event is designed to foster
uniquely Hawaiian experiences for participants through their
personal contact with these experts.
Throughout history, the nourishing spirit of
Kalahuipuaa, now known as Mauna Lani, has been revered and
cherished by the people of the Islands. In the past, one could only
visit by invitation from Hawaiian royalty. Now, Mauna Lani invites
guests to honor this legacy and join in the spirit of health and
renewal.
“We’re very privileged that Mauna Lani is on sacred
land,” said Sylvia Sepielli, owner of Sylvia Planning & Design
(SPAd), the company that operates Mauna Lani Spa. “Especially local
people know that this is a place to recuperate. The land here has
been protected, respected and honored.”
The power of the land where Mauna Lani is located
is what attracts attendees who are in transition, Sepielli
added.
“We see people looking for personal enrichment and
ways to find balance in their lives,” she explained. “It’s not a
fitness event. It’s about people learning about themselves and
life.”
The core theme that runs through the retreat is
healing, explained Sepielli. “Every culture that has existed has
healing aspects individual to that culture,” she said. “Ke Kumu
shares these philosophies and practices, teaching that basic truths
run cross culturally.”
Sepielli added that attendees looking for a way to
heal range from family members trying to re-bond to people dealing
with divorce, illness or death.
While the 2006 line-up of Ke Kumu presenters and
speakers is still in the works, several have made early
commitments.
The Hawaiian Masters
Danny Kaniela Akaka, Mauna Lani’s resident Hawaiian
historian and kumu (teacher), will lead discussions with local
kupuna (elders), kahu (Hawaiian spiritual leaders) and healers on
the history and legends of Mauna Lani and spiritual healing on the
Big Island.
The Lifestyle Experts
Dr. Jeffry S. Life of the Cenegenics Medical
Institute will discuss the wisdom and tools necessary to help in
aging successfully.
Roger Gabriel has assisted Deepak Chopra with
numerous seminars and workshops, teaching meditation. Having
traveled extensively in India, Gabriel will explain his deep
appreciation of its spiritual and cultural wealth.

Recognized for offering a unique “sense of place”
with surrounding ancient Hawaiian fishponds, petroglyph fields and
Hawaiian preservation sites, Mauna Lani Spa reflects the Resort’s
lifework to preserve the cultural and spiritual environment of
Hawaii. Built amid ancient Hawaiian lava tubes, Kahi Kihaka (place
of soaring) harnesses the energy and healing elements of the land
and incorporates both into every therapy session. The facility will
be a focal point at the Ke Kumu event.
