Stunning Luxury Hotels in Mexico City

Aug 03, 2015

As the nation’s capital, Mexico City is the region’s biggest hub for finance, industry and culture. So it’s only natural that this bustling metropolis — one of the largest in the world — attracts a sizeable number of wealthy travelers who come to do business and also to enjoy sophisticated, big-city getaways. Hoteliers are constantly honing their ability to serve the upscale market, with posh accommodations designed to suit a variety of tastes, from traditionally elegant to hip and modern.

For travelers seeking top-of-the-line service and amenities, one of the best places to check in is St. Regis Mexico City. The guestbook at the reception desk illustrates some of the heavyweight celebrities and politicians who have stayed here (much of the cast of the next James Bond movie recently made the property their temporary home) — and indeed, big-time movers and shakers appreciate the attentive service, personal butlers and respect for privacy that the hotel offers. St. Regis Mexico City recently debuted a new French restaurant, La Table Krug. The small, stylish and exclusive venue serves sumptuous 11-course meals, as well as wine and Krug Champagne. Guests at the property will enjoy stunning views of the grand Paseo de la Reforma boulevard, as well as a variety of treatments at the on-site spa.

Among the newest upscale properties in Mexico City is Hippodrome hotel, which opened this year in the chic La Condesa district. With just 16 guestrooms, this property — set in a former apartment building built in 1931 — exudes tranquil elegance and has the feeling of a private residence. Marble bathrooms, in-room breakfast service and stylish furnishings add to the ambiance, and Hippodrome also has a well-regarded restaurant with an open-air terrace.

Nearby in the Condesa district is the aptly named Condesa DF, a stylish creation by Grupo Habita, the Mexican hotelier that first introduced homegrown boutique style to Mexico. The company runs other equally fashionable properties in the capital, including Distrito Capital, Habita Hotel and Downtown Mexico.

Another must-see neighborhood for upscale globetrotters is Polanco, where international name-brand shops and haute cuisine attract well-heeled locals and visitors alike. Among the high-profile accommodations here is InterContinental Presidente Mexico City, which recently completed an impressive renovation, bringing fresh colors and decor to its handsomely designed guestrooms, many of which have gorgeous views of Chapultepec Park. No fewer than six restaurants — including Chapulin, a fashionable new venue with expertly prepared contemporary Mexican cuisine — offer a variety of international dining options without leaving the property. Also recently renovated is Four Seasons Hotel Mexico, D.F., which is wrapping up a $14 million update to its 240 guestrooms and public spaces.

Travelers looking for luxury in a central location near the Centro Historico, the neighborhood where many of the city’s most famous historic sites are located — including the Zocalo, Metropolitan Cathedral and the beautiful Palacio de Bellas Artes — will do well at Hilton Mexico City Reforma. The property is across the street from the lovely Alameda park and located near Paseo de la Reforma. For the best experience, book one of the Executive Level rooms, set on floors 25 to 27. The views are simply spectacular, and the accommodations include access to the expansive Executive Lounge, which offers a generous breakfast buffet, all-day nonalcoholic beverages and evening cocktails and ample hot hors d’oeuvres, as well as private check-in and checkout services.
