In 1976, Wailea Resort’s very first hotel, Maui Inter-Continental, opened in an enviable oceanside location. Now, after several identity changes over the decades, it has stepped back into the spotlight as Wailea Beach Resort - Marriott, Maui.
According to Thomas Foti, general manager for Wailea Beach Resort, a $100 million renovation has taken the property — most recently known as Wailea Beach Marriott Resort & Spa — to a higher level of hospitality.
“The reimagination has transformed Wailea’s original resort into an elevated contemporary retreat,” Foti said. “It brings an entirely new set of experiences to Maui.”
Wailea Beach Resort debuted in December 2016. Among its many selling points is the indoor-outdoor Humble Market Kitchin, the newest restaurant by famed Hawaiian chef Roy Yamaguchi. The hotel features three other eateries, as well.
Also notable is the hotel’s 2-acre Nalu pool, which boasts a 325-foot-long water slide — the longest of any resort in Hawaii — plus an interactive splash zone, a swim-through grotto and three more slides.
“The Nalu pool will be the adventure epicenter for families and kids,” Foti said.
Other pools at the hotel include an adults-only hub with overwater private cabanas; two infinity-edge pools; and a dive pool for watersports such as scuba diving and snorkeling.
Targeting Families, Couples and Adventure TravelersWailea Beach Resort holds great appeal for families, Foti says.
“Our Kolohe Keiki Club is an engaging learning and play facility that children can call their own,” he said.
Families also will like the movie house with surround sound and the game space with foosball, billiards, an Xbox and vintage arcade games.
Other markets ripe for the hotel are couples and travelers who are seeking a combination of relaxation and adventure, Foti notes.
“The resort’s location and landscaping help guests feel as though they are in a retreat of their own, since there is an extraordinary space-to-guest ratio,” Foti said.
Intimate alcoves spread out across the property provide peace and quiet, he says, while open areas call to clients in search of livelier activities.
Wailea Beach Resort’s 491 guestrooms and 56 suites offer enhanced technology such as custom music streaming, mirror-casting from computers, iPads and other devices, and personalized Netflix and Hulu content. Every room has an outdoor lanai, and a handful of accommodations are set remarkably close to the sea.
Additional improvements at the resort include a new arrival and departure lounge, a renovated spa, indoor and outdoor group space and a new luau.
Nightly rates start at $519, with a 10 percent commission. Travel agents who visit the resort get a 25 percent discount on retail rates, plus free upgrades when available.
Through December 2017, Wailea Beach Resort is offering a four-night package called The Water Awaits, with breakfast and other inclusions, for $539 per night.
