Review: Casona Roma Norte

Feb 05, 2025
Hotel Reviews  Mexico  Mexico City

With its tree-lined streets, diverse dining options and interesting shops, Roma Norte is one of the trendiest neighborhoods in Mexico City. And one of the newest — and most immersive — accommodation options in this fascinating area of the city is Casona Roma Norte, a hotel that offers a variety of interesting gustatory experiences.

During my most recent visit to Mexico’s capital, I checked into the 32-room Casona Roma Norte and was immediately impressed by the sophisticated and artsy yet supremely comfortable vibe, an ambience enhanced by a soft color palette and original artwork. It’s a noteworthy complement to the diverse creative scene that has made Roma Norte so popular with travelers and expats. If you’re going to stay in the heart of this decidedly hip neighborhood, after all, it makes sense to stay in an equally cool hotel.

Casona Roma Norte debuted in October 2024 as the latest offering from Hamak Hotels, a hospitality company known for the uniqueness of each of its properties, which include Hotel Sin Nombre in Oaxaca and Tropicana Los Cabos, Tapestry Collection by Hilton.

Casona Roma Norte — which is limited to guests ages 12 and older — is set in a beautifully reimagined mansion that dates to the 1920s, and the attention to detail is evident in the renovation work, led by architecture firm Colonnier Arquitectos, and the wonderfully photogenic interior design, handled by Simple Arquitectura. Every inch of this hotel seems designed to delight the senses.

Exploring Casona Roma Norte

During my two-day stay, I experienced several of the hotel’s unique features. I felt right at home in my guestroom, which was bathed in pleasing tones of white and light gray. Classic design details such as crown molding and French windows that open onto a quiet side street were among my favorite parts of the room — along with the 55-inch, wall-mounted Samsung television that, when not functioning as a TV, displayed a variety of rotating artwork. The large marble bathroom was another standout in the guest space, as were the 450-thread-count sheets, Nespresso coffeemaker and well-stocked minibar.

Casona Roma Norte may only have 32 rooms, but its culinary offerings are diverse, sophisticated and extensive enough to attract patrons who aren’t even staying at the hotel. My first flavorful experience took place at Akamba, a small, stylish venue on the basement level that’s described as a “flavor laboratory.” There, a knowledgeable agave concierge took me and my husband on a “mezcal route” journey that included sampling multiple variations of the popular spirit as we learned about its origins. The space can host a variety of customized tastings and experiences, based on guest’s interests, and the mezcal tastings are often tailored to fit with specific seasons and holidays.

Our next stop was at Suchi, a Japanese-Sinaloan fusion restaurant where I fell in love with the decor — clever illustrations of Mexican lucha libre wrestlers that made me wish they’d sell the cool plates to take home. Chef Aquiles Chavez does a magnificent job with the beautifully presented cuisine, which includes sushi, tempura, sashimi and tostadas. The tasty dishes are complemented by attentive service and — on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights — music mixed by a live DJ.

Additional dining options at Casona Roma Norte include La Macaria, a matcha and tearoom that’s also inspired by Japanese traditions, and Aquiles, where chef Chavez’s menu focuses on sustainable, “field to table” cuisine.
On the rooftop, I toured two interesting venues that weren’t open at the time of my visit but should be by press time: Holden, an attractive, open-air bar and cafe that makes the most of its leafy, tree-lined setting, and Mirror, a speakeasy located — logically enough — behind a mirrored wall. That will surely be an ideal place to sip cocktails after dark.

Also on the rooftop level is a small but nicely equipped gym, which benefits from lots of natural light, and the Relax Room, a small spa space offering treatments such as aromatherapy, exfoliation, massages and facials.
Guests will also find a variety of restaurants, bars, shops and attractions within walking distance. During my visit, I discovered Museo Casa de las Mil Munecas (House of a Thousand Dolls Museum), which opened in 2024 and showcases more than 1,000 dolls from various eras and countries.

For travelers looking to stay in the vibrant Roma Norte neighborhood, Casona Roma Norte provides a worthwhile option with attractive style and memorable culinary experiences.
