Puerto Vallarta’s Tourism Board and the city’s Municipal Health Counsel (COMUDIS) have implemented a series of initiatives to improve accessibility for the more than 13, 000 disabled travelers the destination receives yearly.
Set to begin operations in June, there will be four first aid kiosks in strategic points throughout the city’s tourist area. Each designated kiosk will offer first aid assistance as well as rent out orthopedic aids (wheelchairs, crutches, canes and walkers) to the public. Tourists and locals will have to provide legal identification to rent the orthopedic equipment. The kiosks will be located at the beginning of the Malecon, Lazaro Cardenas Park, Mexico and San Salvador avenue crossing and at Los Arcos.
Other initiatives include the creation of government sanctioned handicap parking permits for persons of disability that operate motor vehicles. This measure will increase the availability of the designated handicap parking spaces located all over the city.
