Tempted by the Fruit of Another

Apr 11, 2009

It’s a Thursday evening in Los Cabos and, in the outdoor lounge area called Melange, some guests are relaxing in comfy lounge chairs, while others bask in the warmth of the open-air fireplace. A live band is striking up its rendition of a variety of hits from the late ’90s. And as the evening continues, some night owls will head to L’alternative Disco, the on-site nightclub, to take a spin on the dance floor and enjoy some live entertainment. Others will head back to their rooms for a quiet night. Either way, the options for activities and diversion, day and night, are many at Temptation Resort Spa in Los Cabos — the second property to carry the new Temptation name, which was introduced by Original Resorts in Cancun.

The hotel in Cabo — which opened in February under the Temptation banner — represents a repositioning by the parent company, who had been operating it as Desire, a clothing-optional property similar to the one that still exists on the Mexican Caribbean coast. At the new property, the ambiance is definitely more conservative than its sister resorts, though the Temptation Resort Spa Los Cabos is not for everyone. For example, there is a topless-optional pool area, some nude artwork gracing the walls and a few rather randy live shows (including male strippers and female lingerie models). But other than that, Temptation is pretty much like any other all-inclusive resort with a trendy vibe, focused on adults ages 21 and over.

The 149-room resort is well appointed and has more than enough to keep clients on site — including five bars and a 39-person rooftop Jacuzzi with excellent beach views. The large swimming pool has a swim-up bar and is surrounded by Balinese-style daybeds, perfect for soaking up the sun or getting some shade. There is also a private beach area with daybeds and a new bar area.

The property has three restaurants. For my first dinner, I went to Suki, a darkly lit, stylish venue where the brown leather walls glow with tiny fiber-optic lights. The contemporary, Asian-fusion cuisine was tasty and beautifully presented. Even the daily breakfast buffet — served at Il Piacere, which has indoor and outdoor seating — was as tempting as the table-served dinner options.

Casual lunch is served buffet-style and a la carte at Tentazione, a poolside, open-air restaurant covered by a palapa. By night, it becomes a more elegant, candlelit venue with an a la carte Italian menu.

Guestrooms are comfortable and sleek with dark wood furnishings. The three room categories — Deluxe Rooms, Jacuzzi Suites and Temptation Suites — come with private terraces or balconies, as well as flat-screen televisions with international satellite reception (on which an adult channel sometimes appears).

Temptation’s location can also be a selling point. It’s about 15 minutes by car from the Los Cabos airport and even closer to the center of San Jose del Cabo’s historic center. But with so much to do within the resort, most of the guests I met were spending nearly their entire visits within its borders. The temptation to leave, apparently, wasn’t as great as the temptation to stay.

Temptation Resort Spa is offering a 40 percent discount off its regular rates, with prices between $113 and $187 per person, per night, based on double occupancy, for all-inclusive room accommodations through Dec. 27.

The resort has unveiled a variety of events to provide guests with more reasons to stay on site. Among them are a five-day Cinco de Mayo celebration (May 1-5) and Sexy Seniors Week (June 8-14), filled with music and events designed for travelers ages 50 and older. Also notable is the Freedom Party/Suddenly Single Week (July 15-19), which targets single parents and the newly single, offering interactive activities aimed to get guests socializing.
