The Changing Tides of Los Cabos

May 02, 2011
It’s not often that an icon changes its stripes. For the first time since 2008, sand appeared under Los Cabos’ iconic rock formation El Arco (The Arch). This change in topography is dependent on the receding tides surrounding El Arco and only occurs every four to seven years. This isn’t the only change Los Cabos is seeing — new attractions and resorts are also making an appearance.

Camel Rides
The Outback & Camel Safari Tour by Cabo Adventures debuted last January. The camels were brought to Los Cabos specifically for this new excursion, which includes a beachside camel ride along the San Cristobal coastline. The camels have quite a pedigree. They have been trained by Sidi-Amar Taou of the Bedouin tribe of Niger, one of the last nomadic tribes in existence. The excursion lasts approximately four hours and includes a walking tour of the desert, where a guide contributes information about the native flora and fauna of Baja Sur. The trip concludes with a traditional Mexican meal, complete with handmade tortillas, mole chicken, salsa and a tequila tasting.

Swimming With Whale Sharks
Cabo Expeditions is offering a new swimming with whale sharks excursion called Gentle Giants of the Sea. Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world, and the tour allows travelers to get up close to the huge creatures. The tour lasts a total of eight hours and includes roundtrip, private transportation from Los Cabos to La Paz Bay, bilingual and certified captains, marine biologists, federally licensed guides and a spotter plane to help find the best place to locate the whale sharks in their feeding grounds. The tour runs daily from January through June and is limited to a maximum of 10 participants in order to ensure an intimate whale shark experience.

A Grand Opening
Grand Solmar Land’s End Resort & Spa is preparing for the phase one grand opening on May 19 with 119 suites available for booking. When the second phase is completed, the resort will have 289 suites in six categories, all with ocean views. All suites will also offer a full kitchen with marble counters and stainless steel appliances, in-villa dining and spa services, private terraces, multiple flat-screen satellite televisions, separate sitting areas, in-room safes, luxury bathrooms with steam showers and wireless Internet access.

Guests at Grand Solmar will also be able to experience sister resort Playa Grande Resort & Grand Spas’ Thalassotherapy Center. There, guests can take curative and preventative seawater baths and seaweed-based treatments that incorporate seawater from the Sea of Cortez.

Art and Handicrafts
Luxury Avenue Los Cabos — home to designer boutiques including CH Carolina Herrera, Salvatore Ferragamo, Cartier, Fendi and Chopard — occupies a prime spot on the waterfront at the center of the Cabo San Lucas marina. Luxury Avenue has decided to transform its halls into an art gallery by showcasing the work of well-known and up-and-coming Mexican artists in a series of permanent and rotating exhibitions.

The first permanent art exhibit at Luxury Avenue Los Cabos features 69 handcrafted pieces of Mata Ortiz pottery. Mata Ortiz, where the pottery is made, is a small village in the state of Chihuahua. Each piece of pottery is made from local and natural materials that are shaped, polished and painted by hand, in much the same way pottery was crafted in the region 1,000 years ago. The intricate designs on each piece vary from the traditional to those utilizing a more contemporary style. All of the pottery on display is available for sale at Ultrajewels within Luxury Avenue Los Cabos.

Also on display at Luxury Avenue Los Cabos is an exhibition of Mexican sculptor Sergio Bustamante’s work.  Twenty-one of his resin-and-bronze sculptures are on display through Sept. 30.
