Downtown Albuquerque’s historic Hotel Andaluz, formerly La Posada Hotel, recently received the New Mexico Achievement Award for 2010 from the New Mexico Recycling Coalition for the green initiatives taken during its recent renovation and demolition.
The hotel recently completed a massive $30 million renovation and upgrade and is currently applying for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification, which would make it the only LEED Gold-certified hotel in the U.S.
“We are proud to have achieved a balance between historic preservation and environmental sustainability,” said Darin Sand of the Goodman Realty Group, owners of the property.
Some of the eco-conscious elements that the hotel has adopted include:
• The installation of low-flow, dual-flush toilets, reducing the hotel’s annual water usage by more than 45 percent
• The installation of LED interior lighting
• The use of bamboo furniture, which is considered to be a renewable resource
• The installation of a 73-panel solar thermal power system on the hotel’s roof
The original hotel was opened as La Posada in 1939 by native New Mexican Conrad Hilton and was Hilton’s second hotel. Gary Goodman of the Goodman Realty Group purchased the hotel in 2005 and has since overseen its environmentally conscious and historic renovation.
