Hanging with some hungry homies in Chicago’s trendy Lincoln Park neighborhood? Head to Homeslice, which serves a decidedly posh pizza-loving crowd and features more than 30 types of pies piled high with toppings.
Although it’s not known for my favorite style of pizza (Chicago deep-dish), this always-busy pizzeria holds its own with the Windy City crowd. It pays homage to its Oregonian owners, with fresh-made, hand-tossed pies served “Oregon-style”: with a not-too-thin and fluffy crust. The interior resembles a log cabin, and all the wood-inspired decor comes directly from Oregon. If the weather is suitable, I recommend asking for a spot on the outdoor patio, which is draped with string lights and greenery and features a decked-out airstream filled with more tables.
My favorite menu items include the meaty BMZ (topped with Canadian bacon, pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms, green peppers and black olives) and the veggie-heavy Hughes Delight (with broccoli, Roma tomatoes, green peppers, roasted garlic, kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, portabella mushrooms and feta). There’s also an option to customize individual pizzas, or diners can choose from the restaurant’s hefty spread of soups, salads and appetizers. (Pro tip: Get the breadsticks and goat cheese appetizer — trust me.)
During my most recent visit to Chicago, I decided to try out Homeslice’s breakfast and brunch options. Although pizza lovers can still get their fix by adding an egg to any pie, I indulged with the A-Waffle-Lot-of Breakfast Sandwhich, which features ham, bacon, cheddar and an egg atop a waffle. It hit the spot, but not as much as my Hangover Iced Coffee, an Instagram-worthy cold brew concoction of coffee, vanilla vodka and rum cream that’s topped with a glazed doughnut.
