Landmark has a long history on Maui, having built and managed the Embassy Suites Maui as well as the former Kea Lani Hotel and Resort, now a Fairmont property. Landmark is also the management company for the Kahala Hotel and Resort on Oahu.
Shawn Sweeney, Landmark's senior vice president of operations, will oversee the new management group at Makena.
"Makena is a very special part of Maui and so much of the island's early history is rooted in this area," said Sweeney. "For our Landmark team, it feels like coming home."
Sweeney said that plans are in hand to update the 310-room hotel.
"While this will not be an immediate refurbishment, we intend to make a guest experience difference with the resources we have," said Sweeney. "The resort has always had a tradition of service and the employees have gone through so much uncertainty in the past few years. We intend to work closely with the hotel's union and to re-institute training programs so that the Makena Beach and Golf Resort can become one of the truly great hotels in Hawaii."
