Konstantin Dimopoulos installed the living outdoor art project, “The Blue Trees,” in Sacramento in mid-October, the artist’s fifth Blue Trees exhibit in his fight to educate urbanites about the problems of global deforestation.
For the project, Dimopoulos painted 20 mature trees on 13th Street in Sacramento and 40 containers to be showcased around the city before being planted in the ground. The paint, a bright blue, non-toxic and environmentally friendly pigment, will stay on the trees for approximately six months, thus creating a natural, undetermined duration for the project.
Several Sacramento businesses and organizations — including the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Sacramento Tree Foundation — support the project for its attention to the city’s valuable urban forest. Dimopoulos last installed “The Blue Trees” in Seattle this year, and the project will appear next in Florida in late October of this year and in Houston in 2013.
