What: New York Dominates the Top 10 Christmas Travel List
According to Allianz Travel Insurance’s analysis of four million itineraries between Dec. 18 and Dec. 30, most travelers departing U.S. airports (87%) will be traveling domestically.
The top 10 U.S. destinations for holiday travel this year are, in order: New York; Seattle (last year’s top destination); Orlando; Los Angeles; Phoenix; Boston; Atlanta; Las Vegas; Salt Lake City; and Dallas-Fort Worth.
Mexico dominates the international travel list with Cancun, San Jose Del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta taking the top three spots (in order). Rounding out the top 10 list are Montego Bay, Jamaica; Oranjestad, Aruba; London; Nassau, Bahamas; Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; Providenciales, Turks and Caicos; and Paris.
Why It Matters: More Americans Are Traveling This Holiday Season
Americans are excited to travel again, with holiday travel increasing by 34% this year compared to 2020, according to Allianz. And while most U.S. travelers are choosing to stay domestic, the lure of Mexico’s sun-and-sand destinations remains strong, echoing 2021 Thanksgiving travel trends.
What They Are Saying: Travelers Are Returning to Favorite Destinations
“Americans are eager to travel again, and one trend we’ve seen is travelers returning to the places they love, whether that’s a cosmopolitan Christmas in New York City or basking in the sun on the beautiful beaches of Mexico,” said Daniel Durazo, director of marketing and communications for Allianz Partners USA.
