What
Starting in October, New Zealand will require an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) and International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) from incoming travelers from specific countries. The prerequisites were first announced in late 2018 and made official Feb. 28.
Why It Matters
About 1.5 million air and cruise travelers, including those coming from the U.S., will be affected. Starting in July, clients can request and pay for an ETA and IVL via the Immigration NZ website or ETA mobile app. The move is intended to help improve assessment of incoming clients, reduce border clearance time and contribute directly to New Zealand’s tourism infrastructure.
Fast Facts
- An ETA should be requested well in advance of a trip to New Zealand; it can take up to 72 hours to be approved.
- An ETA costs about $6.12 USD when submitted using the mobile app or $8.16 USD when submitted via the website form.
- The IVL costs $23.80 USD for each person traveling to New Zealand and will be charged in the same transaction as the ETA.
- The ETA and IVL are valid for multiple visits and up to two years.
