What: Top Travel Destinations for Summer 2022 Include the U.S. and Europe
Luxury travel advisor consortium Virtuoso recently shared where affluent Americans are venturing this summer, according to its data warehouse of more than $49.5 billion in travel bookings. Top domestic destinations include California, Hawaii, Florida, Massachusetts, Colorado, Washington, Montana, South Carolina, New York and Alaska. The top 10 international destinations for summer 2022 include the U.S., Italy, France, Canada, Greece, U.K., Spain, Mexico, Ireland and Switzerland.
Why It Matters: Travel Bookings Are Booming
Because it is based on actual bookings, Virtuoso’s list provides an exceptionally reliable picture of what we can expect this summer. In addition to the top destinations, Virtuoso’s data shows that travel is booming overall, with travelers excited to finally return to Europe after the COVID-19 pandemic. And, with seven of the top 10 destinations located in Europe, pent-up demand is clearly outweighing any concerns associated with the conflict in Ukraine. No matter where clients decide to go this summer and beyond, advisors should be encouraging them to plan early.
Fast Facts: Seasonal Spots Are Becoming Year-Round Destinations
- All data is based on hotel bookings made by Virtuoso-affiliated U.S. leisure travelers and includes travel for June, July and August 2022.
- A key trend Virtuoso has been tracking throughout the pandemic is the shift from destination seasonality caused by the pandemic and its impact on the travel cycle. Traditional ski destinations such as Colorado and Montana are now popular summer choices, while southeastern states, including South Carolina and Florida, continue to be on the hot list into the warmer months. Meanwhile, Alaska cracks the top 10 without even taking into account the cruising season, which is how most travelers experience the state.
