Comic-Con International 2023 may have just come to a close, but pop culture fans will soon have another outlet for their affinities. Comic-Con: The Cruise will be heading to sea for the first time on Feb. 5, 2025. The themed voyage, in partnership with Entertainment Cruise Productions (ECP), will mirror the conference’s usual four-day duration. Departing from Tampa, Fla., onboard Royal Caribbean International’s Serenade of the Seas, the cruise will allow the Comic-Con community of creators, talent and fans to dine, party and mingle together.
“With a stellar reputation for producing fan events on the ocean, we are excited that Entertainment Cruise Productions has developed Comic-Con: The Cruise to be a truly new kind of adventure,” said David Glanzer, spokesperson for the convention. “The team at ECP shares our passion for transformational events and innovative programming and we are excited they are building something so amazing."
The cruise promises a lineup of actors, creators, authors and more onboard the Royal Caribbean ship, extending to special daily performances and nightly theme parties including a party band, a DJ and cosplay opportunities. Unique events will further extend to talent-hosted tastings, trivia sessions and live demonstrations, plus meet-and-greets, autograph and photo sessions, video and tabletop gaming, epic trivia contests and more.
No Comic-Con event at sea or otherwise would be compete without signature group panels and Q&A sessions on a wide variety of topics, as well as an array of onboard vendors.
“Comic-Con is unrivaled in creating a community that brings people together for experiences you can’t find anywhere else,” said Greg Laubach, executive director of Entertainment Cruise Productions. “It’s what we love to do, and we have designed Comic-Con: The Cruise to be a one-of-a-kind ultimate fan adventure."
How Does Comic-Con: The Cruise Compare to Other Theme Cruises?
As a frequent attendee of over a dozen Comic-Con events in my homeport of San Diego, Calif., I’ve actively discussed the idea of such a cruise myself over the last couple of decades. In fact, in my opinion, one of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-Class ships would have been even more ideal, given the 6,500-or-so-passenger vessels hold just about the same capacity as the massive land-based Hall H at the San Diego Convention Center does for the largest panels. However, the 2,476-guest Serenade can certainly hold its own, as similarly sized vessels host other theme cruises.
For instance, there’s already Star Trek: The Cruise, also presented by Entertainment Cruise Productions, as well as Star Wars Day at Sea and Marvel Day at Sea on Disney Cruise Line. Any number of similar franchises could easily make their way onboard Comic-Con: The Cruise.
Alternately, there’s the chance that the voyage goes back to basics a bit, as this year’s event did. Due to the current Hollywood writers and actors strikes, most large film studios were absent, making for a conference focused more on core comics.
Comic-Con: The Cruise will likely strike a balance somewhere in between, with an onboard version of Artists’ Alley for intimate interactions between creator and consumer. Traditional comic books and graphic novels will make their way onboard to be sold alongside logo merchandise commemorating the event. And clients can also expect fan-favorite personalities to be confirmed later.
In addition to any onboard events, the cruise will set sail for the Caribbean and its own points of interest, not to mention highlight existing Serenade of the Seas restaurants, casino and spa. Rates for Comic-Con: The Cruise begin at $990 per person (double occupancy), inclusive of all performances, interviews, parties, events and most meals. Special hosted events may cost extra.
