From its sun-kissed beaches and many national parks to diverse cityscapes, California offers families dozens of postcard-perfect vacation moments. This summer, my family found ours away from the coast, along the Nevada border, in North Lake Tahoe’s Incline Village.
There, we rented a house through HomeAway along with another family, which gave us live-like-a-local access to beaches and a cornucopia of activities.
On our weeklong adventure, we enjoyed the lake on four distinct beaches; hiked to “Monkey Rock” to take in picturesque views; conquered our fears while ziplining through Treetop Adventure Park; and even introduced the kids (Piper, age 7, and Addy, age 10) to “A Comedy of Errors” at the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival.
To cap off our adventure, we traveled about 40 minutes from Tahoe — and its crowds — to find ourselves surrounded by mountains in a glacier-carved bowl filled with the frigid turquoise waters of Angora Lakes Resort. This hidden beach sanctuary is also famous for serving freshly squeezed lemonade.

This was our first-ever trip to Lake Tahoe, but thanks to the boastful beauty of this place and the many activities available to our family, there’s no question it won’t be our last.
