Kauai Voted Hawaii’s Best Island

Aug 09, 2010

Based on good looks alone, Kauai is a real crowd-pleaser. Add to that its abundance of activities and it’s practically unbeatable as a destination. Small wonder, then, that the Garden Isle recently was named Hawaii’s Best Island in Travel + Leisure (T+L) magazine’s 2010 World’s Best Awards.

“This award is shared by all of the people of Kauai who love our island, care for our island and work hard to make it one of the most special places on earth,” said Kauai mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. “We are honored that the readers of Travel and Leisure magazine recognize this, and we will continue to share Kauai with the world in a way that preserves the beauty and character of our island home.”

This is the second consecutive year — and the third year out of the past five — that Kauai has earned T+L’s top nod amongst all the Hawaiian Islands.

Also, in the magazine’s listing of World’s Best Islands for 2010, Kauai ranked second overall, trailing only the Galapagos Islands.

T+L’s World’s Best Awards are determined by reader surveys. Readers are asked to rate islands on five qualities: natural attractions, activities and sights, restaurants and food, people and value.

“People are touched by the serenity of Kauai’s tropical beauty and how the island allows them to escape the stress of their daily lives and be rejuvenated by nature,” said Kauai Visitors Bureau executive director Sue Kanoho. “This is such a thrill for Kauai to again earn this recognition from Travel and Leisure’s readers because of the strong message that it sends to travelers worldwide.”

Kauai’s spectacular tropical landscapes are ideal for clients who enjoy exploring the outdoors and relaxing in an idyllic island setting. Along with 50 miles of white-sand beaches, it features such natural attractions as Waimea Canyon — measuring 10 miles long, one mile wide and 3,500 feet deep — and the Na Pali Coast, with its stunning 3,000-foot sea cliffs.

Active clients can take advantage of Kauai’s many opportunities for hiking, biking, mountain tubing, kayaking, snorkeling, horseback riding, ATV adventures, zipline rides and helicopter and boat tours.

Proponents of the island can keep abreast of its news via Twitter (@kauaidiscovery) and as a fan of the Kauai Visitors Bureau’s Facebook page.
