Hawaii is a melting pot of global cultures, each adding to its unique and vibrant landscape. And throughout the year, the islands host many festivals and events that pay tribute to the contributions of these diverse communities.

Whether attending a three-day hula competition or a Japanese cherry blossom festival, locals and tourists alike will learn about, experience and celebrate the multi-ethnic communities that call the islands of Hawaii home during the following upcoming events.

Festivities on Kauai

Perfect for music lovers, Kauai is holding its 32nd annual Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival on Nov. 24. The event will include some of Hawaii’s top artists in the Slack Key genre, as well as the chance to learn about the genre’s connection to Hawaiian cowboys. Local crafters will also be in attendance, offering visitors unique souvenirs for purchase at the festival.

Featuring a variety of bands, local entertainers and authentic island cuisine, the Waimea Town Celebration offers nine days of tireless fun. Running from Feb. 15-23, 2025, the festival will provide a wide range of activities for attendees to participate in, such as canoe racing, rodeos, hula, food-eating contests and more.

Maui Events

The 29th East Maui Taro Festival, originally established to promote community and share Hawaiian culture with the world, will be held on April 26, 2025. In honor of taro, a significant food source in Hawaii, the festival will host a farmers’ market, live music, poi-pounding demonstrations and taro-based cuisine.

A celebration of the history, arts, traditions and foods of the Japanese culture, Maui Matsuri is Maui’s largest festival on this topic. The event showcases Japanese entertainment, exhibits and multicultural dishes, and concludes with a traditional obon dance. Attendees are encouraged to share Japanese culture and help pass down its traditions. Maui Matsuri takes place in May each year; dates for 2025 have yet to be announced.

Oahu Celebrations

Free to attend, the 29th annual Honolulu Festival will be held from March 7-9, 2025. With events conveniently located near the center of Honolulu, this festival will offer an array of dance performances, educational programs and traditional art demonstrations. The celebration will conclude with an extravagant parade down the main street of Waikiki.

Events Around Hawaii Island

For demonstrations of traditional tea ceremonies and bonsai, send clients to the Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival, taking place on Feb. 1, 2025. The event features cooking demonstrations, Japanese performing arts, a craft fair and an array of musical performances to commemorate the blooming of the town’s cherry blossoms. Admission is free.

The action-packed Panaewa Stampede Rodeo competitions offer exciting opportunities for all age groups. A variety of contests featuring paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) rodeo skills will be held, such as bull riding, barrel racing and calf roping. Food vendors and craft booths will also be present. The two-day event typically takes place over Presidents’ Day Weekend each February.

Featuring a three-day hula competition, cultural demonstrations, an arts fair and a parade through the town of Hilo, the weeklong Merrie Monarch Festival will take place from April 20-26, 2025. The festival aims to educate individuals on the history of Hawaii, encourage the art of hula and preserve Hawaiian culture.
