A High-Tech Stay at Unico 20 87 Hotel Riviera Maya

I’ve never used a hotel app more than I did during my stay at Unico 20˚87˚ Hotel Riviera Maya.

The ease with which I, a tech-resistant traveler, warmed to the hotel’s decidedly 21st-century amenity says a lot about how the adults-only, all-inclusive resort goes beyond simply offering a luxurious stay. Unico 20˚87˚ (the numbers refer to the hotel’s coordinates on the globe) provides tools to make the experience even better.

Located on Mexico’s Riviera Maya between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, Unico is about an hour from Cancun International Airport. The property is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, so it’s not surprising that personalized service is a central feature. Upon arrival, I was ushered to a couch in the attractive lobby, where a receptionist checked me in and a personal concierge introduced herself and asked for my cell number. She informed me that if I needed anything, at any time, I could text her.

Indeed, technology is used to great effect at Unico, resulting in more attentive service while still allowing for human interaction. The hotel’s free app is full of helpful information and services, and I used it to review activity options, order room service and request housekeeping (I especially liked the ability to note a specific time I wanted my room cleaned). Guests can also use the app to choose from the pillow menu, book tours and even send postcards via email to family and friends.

Tech-enhanced services are just one facet of the resort’s appeal. The word “handsome” easily describes Unico, which in March celebrated two years of operation. Pristinely manicured grounds include a tree-lined promenade running from the lobby to the expansive main pool area, which is flanked by two accommodation wings.

Room categories include Alcoba Swim-up Pool and the hypoallergenic Pure Alcoba. My Alcoba Ocean View room was graced with an expansive balcony with a tub that allowed for sumptuous open-air baths with a Caribbean view.

Cuisine is another highlight of Unico. Four restaurants and a coffee shop serve impressively varied menus, with a la carte dining options and both indoor and outdoor seating. I savored gourmet Mexican fare at Cueva Siete, Asian delights at Mura House and mouthwatering Italian food at Mi Carisa, which sits along a reflecting pool. And with 24-hour room service available by phone or app, clients will never go hungry.

Unico guests can receive certain spa and beauty salon treatments as part of their all-inclusive experience, and the property also offers a variety of interesting excursions. I joined a visit to the beautiful cenotes at Tankah, one of the five luxury Signature Tours.

At Unico, the tech may wow, but it’s the personal experiences that leave the most lasting impression.
